Activity and work:
“Okagami” is exclave in the northern part of Kawasaki-shi. There remains wealthy nature green as forests and fields because most part of Okagami is assigned as urbanization control area. NPO “Shizen-to-kyousei-no-kai TOMOIKI (Kawasaki Organization of Nature Research and Conservation)” act as monthly maintenance work for a country hill and environmental education programs “Nashinoki-ryokuchi (green area of Nashinoki)”,
Borrow KAYA (Japanese nutmeg tree) work is a kind of heavy, so it is hard for members because most of the members are getting old. We want to young people to know Okagami where takes only 30 minutes from Shinjuku and remain full of attractions. So we, including Mr.Kaizawa (NICE CEO) one of residents of Okagami, plan to have an weekend work camp now.
In the first work camp (day camp), we have worked to reap KAYA in September. And we have had a meeting for future tasks. In accordance with the meeting talk, we plan to have a work camp on Jan.13th~14th or Feb.10th~11th. The work will be cutting bamboo for a cottage with Kaya, and set up the cottage.

This is the first memorial work camp as overnight work camp.
We plan to assist reaping Kaya and Yoshi (reed), tying up, and drying on Nov.11th and during the morning on Nov.12th. We plan to participate and assist NPO’s Thanksgiving afternoon on Nov.12th. You can enjoy eating vegetables that are grown at organic fields using “Sumi-jyun”, “Imoni”, and drink during interact.

Background:
Circumstances around cutting and processing woods to fields for conserve water resources of Okagami and greenery country hill scenes give us precious opportunities to learn.
KAYA and YOSHI (Japanese pampas grass) under good maintenance grow good and can be used for thatched rooves. It is necessary to be cut at regular intervals for good grow. And it is useful to conserve greenery country hill scenes that those will be used for thatched rooves. Also, this will be one of good opportunity to kids and young people to know above things. We knew the idea of the work camp from NPO NICE. We have discussed how to have the work camp for kids and families and all people who are interested in Okagami.
Mr. Kaizawa who are a leader of NPO NICE, which held many volunteer’s group work camp all over the world, give us the idea and know-how to the work camp. This is a new project for us to invite participants for volunteer work. We will start up the work camp and aim to collect people to the other works by words of mouths in the hope. Mainly Mr. Doumae of NPO Kawasaki Organization of Nature Research and Conservation and Mr. Takahashi have worked for adjustment of the work camp schedules.
The purpose of the work camp:
We cooperate the work camp with NPO Kawasaki Organization of Nature Research and Conservation. We will support NPO which grow KAYA and YOSHI which native to grow, cut and make use to thatched rooves regularly. Most of NPO members are getting old and lack of man powers. We support them and aim to grow next generations to keep conservation. We want to get volunteers especially have experiences of nature conservation from not only Okagami but all over Japan. And we hope the work will connect networks between Okagami residents, kids, parents, students and adolescences.
The object of the work camp:
We want people to know that the maintenance of green fields, heavy work, give us water sources, precious animals and plants, and safe play grounds. We want people to know how special Okagami is. There are exclave and have wealthy nature, and remain traditional told and customs and festivals, and keep good safety moods in the town where think a great deal of mutual help and morals. And we also aim to make one of the place to interact between new comers and young people who are interested in nature conservation and love Okagami.
