Mittelbau-Dora: Making Visible - Remembering and Shaping

The two-week international encounter project on the site of the former Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp has the motto ‘Making visible’ and is thus actively involved in the design of the site of today's memorial.

The work during the summer camp will consist of excavation work and the visualisation of a barrack foundation in the infirmary of the former prison camp. The work will take place outdoors, in a wooded area, and large and heavy stones will have to be cut. These stones are turned into flat Outline walls set. The work is part of a larger project: the remains of the foundations on the sites of former barracks are to be gradually made visible again so that visitors to the memorial site can recognise the camp structure, which barely exists any more. This year, work will continue on a foundation that has already been started.

The education and communication part of the project will focus on the history of the Nazi concentration camps and the use of concentration camp prisoners in the underground relocation of the armaments industry - using the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp as an example. Due to the location of the project, the focus will be on the so-called prisoner infirmary. The topic of medicine under National Socialism will therefore also be covered. This topic will be approached through tours, working with various sources, exchanging ideas with each other and joint digitally supported project work.

The ‘Dora labour camp’ was founded at the end of August 1943 as a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. As part of the underground relocation of German armaments production in the last two years of the Second World War, concentration camp prisoners had to develop a tunnel system in the Kohnstein mountain near Nordhausen into an underground rocket factory. Series production of the rocket propagated by the Nazi state as ‘Retaliation Weapon 2’ began in January 1944. During the first few months, the prisoners had to live and work in the tunnels. It was not until spring 1944 that an above-ground barracks camp was built and the Dora satellite camp became the Mittelbau concentration camp in its own right. More than 60,000 people from almost every country in Europe, mainly from the Soviet Union, Poland and France, had to perform forced labour for the German armaments industry in the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp complex between 1943 and 1945. One in three of them died.

Protect and Preserve Biodiversity in the Black Forest

There are three main tasks to this project:

? Mowing the protected mountain Meadows: The Meadows are open fields or grasslands, often filled with wildflowers, herbs, and grasses. They can be natural or maintained by man and they serve as important habitats for wildlife, including insects, birds, and small mammals. Meadows are commonly found in valleys, foothills, and near forests, playing a key role in biodiversity and ecosystems. In order to protect all the wildlife here, driving with machines is not permitted, so all the mowing needs to be done by hand. This is a very good way to connect with the land but it can also be a quite physical work.

? Maintaining Capercaillie habitats: Capercaillies are ground-dwelling birds that feed mainly on buds, leaves, berries, and insects. Their populations have declined due to habitat loss and human disturbance, making conservation efforts crucial, especially in regions like the Black Forest, where they are endangered. It is one of the largest chicken bird species in Europe and is threatened with extinction in Germany. You will be removing wood and cutting branches in strategic zones and areas of the Black Forest to promote better conditions in their habitat, increasing their chances of survival, breeding success, and overall population stability.

? Forest maintenance: You will be removing branches from trees (with and without a ladder). Removing branches from trees in the Black Forest helps improve light penetration and biodiversity, creating a healthier habitat for wildlife like the capercaillie, while preventing overcrowding, disease, and reducing the risk of wildfires. The work will be led by a professional instructor, so no previous experience is needed.

The work will be around 30 hours per week, (including a lunchbreak), from Monday to Friday. We begin our work early at 8:00 am to make the most of the cooler morning temperatures. The work site is just a short walk from the accommodation.

Step into Nature, the forests of Heilsbronn

The municipality of Heilsbronn will focus on two different projects to renovate and maintain the town’s infrastructure, with the help of international volunteers:

- Preservation tasks for the “Vita Parcours’” fitness trail: Clear the over-grown plants along the paths and across the different stations, make signs visible, and clean the stations and trails of any leftover trash.

- Renovate the “Barfu?pfa” (barefoot path): This path is highly valued and used by the local community, especially by children and families. It includes many different textures such as pebbles, moss, and pine cones. The tasks will require emptying and refilling different sections of the path.

Additional similar projects may be added. You should expect to be working outdoors alongside municipal workers in renovation or construction tasks. Do not worry! No previous experience is required since a professional instructor will be there to provide support and guidance through the different tasks. You will work 30 hour per week between 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday with a lunchbreak on site.

The Medieval Epic

地元のボランティアチームと一緒に設置作業を行い、スタンドを運営し、料理をして、祭りを盛り上げる。この仕事は、技術的なスキル、体力、組織力が求められる。スタンド、テント、バルナムの設置と撤去を手伝い、案内板、交通計画、レイアウトの整備にも関与する。祭りの物流全般を担当し、料理や掃除も行う。バー、パンケーキスタンドなどの運営も行う。注意点として、最初と最後の週は特に体力的に厳しく、重い荷物の持ち運びや忙しい日々が続く。挑戦を受け入れ、この忘れられない中世の体験をしよう。

Santa B?rbara Altea Estiu V

Summer school aimed at promoting youth learning about the value of nature and the environment by bringing them closer to and connecting them with the local natural ecosystem. This fosters environmental awareness and provides them with learning tools, as well as respect for nature and humanity, through activities focused on the local flora and fauna.
- Volunteers will prepare with the help of the coordinators and campleaders different activities and workshops for the local children (we are looking for committed and proactive participants).
- Volunteers will participate in relaxion workshops, excursions, activities in the rural world and natural sciencies, manual and creative activities.

A space free of screens, warm, for learning and fun among all young people and focused on nature will be created. The participant will be instructed and will instruct to become familiar with the true protagonists of the camps, nature and coexistence. They will learn to know, respect and value the land and the inhabitants who populate it.

Knowledge of English is mandatory and Spanish or Valencian is valued.
During the summer, temperatures can be very high, and weather conditions may not be optimal due to this.

Open Air Museum　中世の生活を再現した博物館の展示物を清掃

エストニア野外博物館に展示されている、埃だらけで黒くなった民族資料の清掃。これらのアイテムは、長い間手を加えられていなかったため、非常に汚れている。例えば、農耕用の車、木製の道具、子ども用のベッド、大きな木製のふるい、脱穀機など、エストニアの田舎生活に特有の大型アイテムが含まれる。掃除機やブラシで掃除する。掃除するアイテムは保存庫から屋外テントに移され、そこの床を修理し、新しい収納棚を設置することができるようになる。
作業は、エストニア野外博物館の敷地内にあるテントの下で、博物館の地元スタッフと一緒に行う。
※作業時間は10時～16時。昼食休憩は13時～14時。土曜日は休み。
※必要な道具、手袋、保護マスク、保護眼鏡などはすべて支給。

Kriusilla有機農場は養蜂、野菜栽培、林業を手がける小さな農場。林業作業（林の整備と除草、植樹、木造建築）だけでなく、野菜の収穫、ハチミツの採取、ミツバチハウスの掃除と改良、場合によっては新しいハウスの建設。家の中での軽作業、建築、ガーデニング。
天候にもよるが、1日の作業時間は5～7時間。

Together for community (Zajedno za zajednicu)

Since the school is regarded as place where many important activities are happening, it is also notable that many local organizations have strong connection with it. The same will be in this case, as well. Since the project can be defined only by 3 areas on this platform, we can't describe everything that will happen, but here we can write more on that. Volunteers will do many tasks in cooperation with many associations in Po?ega. With those of social character, it will be decided which families are in need for additional support, so that volunteers can help to those in danger with their regular activities. Then there will be some visit to the local association for those with cerebral paralysis (help and workshops should be done there). Also, volunteers will be participating in the activities with local Gerontological center, where they will take care of the garden, but also meet older people that will be glad to see the guests. Still, we shouldn't forget that there will be things to do in school's yard, as well, with picking up the raspberries (one of the Serbian national fruits) and blackberries (another among many; Serbia is simply the land of fruits). Planting seeds, taking out the bad plants, feeding the animals-just few of planned actions that will be done during the stay in this marvellous place.

Participants will spend a night in Yeosu with all participants, exploring the city before heading to Geomun Island. There, they will collaborate with professional artists to create artwork using marine debris, household waste, and natural materials which are collected by participants in the island. They will also take part in producing artworks that benefit the local community such as painting and artcrafts. In addition to these creative activities, participants will have time to enjoy Geomun Island’s stunning beaches and beautiful ocean.

Participants will also have the opportunity to share their diverse cultures with local elementary and middle school students through food, games, art, clothing, photography, and more. This cultural exchange will allow both participants and students to experience the joy of diversity and gain valuable insights from different traditions and perspectives.
This experience is perfect for anyone curious about life beyond the city, where the vast sea meets a vibrant island community. It is also an ideal opportunity for those who wish to contribute to local development and foster collaboration within the community.
